Final

I believe my product really has a home made natural feel to it. Something you'd find for sale in a Whole Foods store, Bed Bath & Beyond, Bath&Body Works, or even an Amish whole seller store.

The audience is everyone, however it does appeal more to the female demographic but could easily be made to sale for both male and females. The point of purchase would be in a small metal pail placed next to a register or a larger wash bucket placed strategically on an end cap. Perhaps a dump bin of some kind next to a register as well.

I felt that the match box style package was great for this product and allowed me to create a wonderful visual. I also stayed with the concept of a secret message or saying contained within the packaging. So that purchasers felt a personal tie to the product itself. I decided however to keep that bit of knowledge a little bit more tied to the product itself as I felt sayings like "a penny saved is a penny earned" and "Cleanliness is next to Godliness" was not easily directly tied to the product itself as well as the fact that not all my demographic may believe in a higher power. Staying with the clever naming of the fragrance I decided to go with "You and I were Mint 2 Bee". Meaning that my customers were some how meant to have this wonderful soap they now own. Giving them a since of purpose and providing a feel good vibe to the product.

In the design I used very simplistic lines in various weights teamed with some very nice typography in order to help with the hierarchy in my package design. Almost as dividers adding balance. The fonts used are Garamond and Helvetica. And the effects found in the Text have been created via clipping masks in illustrator Using the exact photography found on the package as the text itself.

The photo used would be interchangeable at the designers discretion and the coloring of the package would vary depending on the scent and or color of the soap inside the box.

Word List and Package Design Research

This is my word list that I have made for the name of my soap, Nitty Gritty, and the fragrance Pink Sands. The name of the fragrance is a fragrance I found online from an official soap maker. The fragrance is made from orange peel oil, lemon grass and pieces of pumice stone. Below is the link to the website in which I found it. As for the name of the soap, that originated from myself. I liked the play on words and thought it would open possibilities for a unique product with endless opertunities.

Below are five examples of the kind of designs i would possibly like to incorporate in my package design. All five designs have different strengths and weaknesses within themselves. I was looking mostly at the type of material used in order to package the product as well as the manipulation of that material that allowed for a unique and interesting product. I also took a look at different design layouts, contrasting colors, placement and of course relevance pertaining to the product.

This design was interesting to me. I really like the flap wrap concept. Even though its very simple it portrays elegance. The corresponding colors to the fragrances is also aesthetically pleasing to me personally. I think it would be acceptable for a upper class soap brand.

The Design below is very fun. I like the idea of an interactive product. Something that turns into something else or has multiple uses. Very intriguing. I'm a fan of this modern design thats been teamed with a brain teaser.

The cheesy design shown below is a little too much for me personally, however there is something to say for the idea itself. The making of something uneatable that looks eatable is possibly worth venturing into. People enjoy products, or are drawn to products, that are more than what they seem.

This particular package design caters to the brand itself. Something you would find in a health food store or store that focuses on selling natural products that do not include harsh chemicals. I like the idea of the sacks. It's different than the traditional packaging for soap. Which I think would entice the consumer base. I like how they incorporated direct objects to their natural brand.

With a very vibrant design to this japanese soap on a rope you are instantly pulled in. The package design itself is not necessarily something to brag about. However the Graphic portion of the design is fantastic because of how catching it is. It also returns to the idea of manipulating paper or materials to shape differently from the norm. This would be useful in attracting consumers to the counter.

About Me

My name is Elizabeth Myers. A current Junior at Rogers State University majoring in Graphic Design with a minor in multimedia. I am probably the only legal drug dealer, aka as a pharmacy technician, you've ever met who would rather be doing graphic design. I've been a student for too many years to count. Believing that to live is to learn. Knowledge is power. Knowing is half the battle.

I would consider myself a bit of a gypsy because of how frequently I have moved and or traveled. While in Montana I worked for a publishing company that published three major newspapers in the Bozeman area. Working under the lead graphic designer was really awesome. I gained a lot of experience in advertising and design/print layout.

So here I am slinging drugs and going back to school.
